Health Literacy Isn’t Just About Simple Words – It’s About the Right Language, Too

Health Literacy Isn’t Just About Simple Words

Plain-language tools solve one barrier to understanding medical information. But for many patients, the bigger barrier is language itself.

A summary that’s clear in English does nothing for a patient who’s more comfortable in Spanish, Mandarin, or Tagalog. Multilingual support in medical AI tools – not just simplifying jargon but translating it into a patient’s preferred language – closes a gap that plain-English tools alone can’t.

Why Language Access Matters

Health literacy and language access go hand in hand. Solving one without the other still leaves a lot of patients behind. A patient can be highly literate in their native language and still misunderstand a diagnosis, a dosage instruction, or a follow-up plan simply because it was never delivered in a language they’re fluent in. Treating “simplify the jargon” and “translate the language” as two separate problems – rather than two halves of the same problem – is where a lot of health communication efforts fall short.
