Reading Medication Labels and Dosages

Prescription shorthand is Latin abbreviations in disguise. Here is the common set.

  • BID — twice a day
  • TID — three times a day
  • PRN — as needed
  • PO — by mouth
Amoxicillin 500 mg PO TID x 7 days
= 500 mg tablet, by mouth, 3x daily, for 7 days
A note: Never adjust a dose based on an article. Confirm with your pharmacist or prescriber.
